Rochester, N.Y. – A growing number of nurse practitioners are providing primary care in areas that are seeing physician shortages.
A new study from the University of Rochester found that the number of nurse practitioners who provide primary care doubled in six years to 123,000 nationwide.
The average number of physicians dropped slightly.
There were similar results in rural communities – although the number of physicians dropped more sharply.
